REINFORCING TRUST & PRIVACY ACROSS ALL CHANNELS & PLATFORMS BY REBRANDING EXPRESSVPN

Year
2020-2021
Evolving a category-leading privacy brand while scaling trust, consistency, and speed across a global product ecosystem
Scope of Work

My role
Design Leadership (Brand, Product, Marketing, Systems)
ExpressVPN was already a market leader in consumer VPN services, known for reliability, performance, and strong privacy credentials. Growth was accelerating, competition was intensifying, and regulatory scrutiny around privacy and data protection was increasing globally.
However, the brand and product experience had not evolved at the same pace as the business:
Visual identity felt dated relative to category maturity
Inconsistencies across product, marketing, and platform touchpoints
Design decisions slowed as scale increased
High-stakes trust signals were not consistently expressed
My role was to lead the evolution of the ExpressVPN brand and redesign its design system, ensuring the experience reflected trust, authority, and clarity, while enabling teams to move faster and more consistently at scale.

THE PROBLEM:
The Core Challenge
In privacy and security products, trust is the product.
While ExpressVPN delivered on performance and privacy technically, the experience risked:
Underselling credibility in a maturing, skeptical market
Fragmenting as new features, regions, and platforms scaled
Becoming harder to evolve without increasing design debt
Key Signals
Visual and interaction patterns varied across platforms
Brand tone oscillated between “approachable” and “technical”
Design teams spent time debating fundamentals instead of solving user problems
Marketing and product experiences felt adjacent, not unified
THE OPPORTUNITY:
To evolve ExpressVPN into a modern, authoritative privacy brand, supported by a cohesive design system that reinforced trust and enabled scale across product, marketing, and platform surfaces.

STRATEGIC APPROACH:
Brand Strategy Reframing
We reframed ExpressVPN’s design philosophy around a simple principle:
“Confidence without noise.”
The brand needed to feel:
Trustworthy, without being cold
Authoritative, without being intimidating
Simple, without feeling simplistic
This led to three guiding design principles:
Principle | Strategic Intent |
Clarity | Reduce cognitive load in high-stakes decisions |
Consistency | Reinforce trust through predictability |
Calm Confidence | Signal security without fear-based tactics |
Leadership Lens
This initiative wasn’t about a visual refresh alone, it was about:
Creating a shared design language across a fast-growing org
Removing ambiguity in how ExpressVPN should “show up”
Enabling designers and engineers to make aligned decisions independently

BRAND EVOLUTION - FROM FAMILIAR TO AUTHORITATIVE:
Visual Identity Evolution
Rather than a radical rebrand, we pursued measured evolution, preserving brand equity while modernizing expression.
Key changes included:
Refined typography to improve readability and authority
A more disciplined color system optimized for accessibility and contrast
Clearer hierarchy and spacing to improve scannability
Reduced visual noise to emphasize core actions and messaging
Design intent: In moments where users worry about privacy, the interface should feel composed, predictable, and reassuring.
Trust Signals Embedded by Design
Clearer system feedback and states
Consistent use of iconography and motion
Transparent explanations for permissions and protections
Reduced reliance on marketing-heavy language inside the product
These choices reinforced trust without requiring users to “believe” marketing claims.

THE EXPRESSVPN DESIGN SYSTEM:
Why the Design System Mattered
At scale, inconsistency becomes a trust liability.
The design system needed to:
Serve product, web, marketing, and platform teams
Support rapid iteration without fragmentation
Encode accessibility, performance, and security considerations
Reduce re-litigation of design fundamentals
What We Built
A centralized, token-based design system
Shared components across product and marketing
Clear rules for typography, color, layout, and motion
Documentation focused on decision-making, not just usage
The system became a shared source of truth, enabling teams to ship confidently and consistently.

ORGANIZATIONAL ENABLEMENT & DESIGNOPS:
Operating at Global Scale
I worked closely with cross-functional leaders to:
Align design standards across time zones and teams
Embed design earlier into product and marketing planning
Introduce clearer design review and critique rituals
Shift designers from reactive delivery to proactive problem-solving
Design as a Trust Function
Design was repositioned as:
A guardian of brand credibility
A partner in product and security decision-making
A driver of user confidence, not just usability
Outcome: Design became a strategic layer in how ExpressVPN communicated trust, not just how it looked.

IMPACT & DIRECTIONAL OUTCOMES:
Outcomes below are directional and reflect observed behavioral shifts, delivery improvements, and industry-aligned benchmarks rather than disclosable internal metrics.
Experience & Brand Impact
Stronger coherence across product and marketing touchpoints
Clearer expression of trust, privacy, and authority
Improved perception of ExpressVPN as a mature, credible market leader
Design & Delivery Impact
Reduced design debt through systemization
Faster decision-making and fewer inconsistencies
Improved accessibility and usability across platforms
Organizational Impact
Higher confidence among product and marketing teams
Design standards adopted as default, not enforced
Better cross-team alignment without increased process overhead

LEADERSHIP REFLECTION:
In security products, design decisions carry ethical weight.
This initiative reinforced that:
Trust is built through consistency, not persuasion
Design systems are instruments of reliability
Leadership means knowing when to evolve, and when to preserve
The best design often feels invisible, but dependable
The ExpressVPN rebrand and design system redesign ensured the company could scale without eroding the trust that made it successful.

BEFORE & AFTER SNAPSHOT:
Dimension | Before | After |
Brand Expression | Familiar but aging | Modern, calm, authoritative |
Design System | Fragmented | Centralized, scalable |
Design Decision-Making | Slower, debated | Faster, principle-led |
Trust Signals | Inconsistent | Embedded throughout |
Design Influence | Support function | Strategic trust partner |

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This was not a radical reinvention.
It was a deliberate evolution by strengthening trust, improving clarity, and building systems that scale.
Design became a stabilizing force in a high-growth, high-stakes product.
